As summer ends and fall’s crisp air arrives, we all gear up for the upcoming season. School is back in session, vacations are ending, and organizations and churches launch new initiatives and programs that build momentum toward their mission. Everything runs at a little faster pace, and at the end of the day, we find ourselves feeling scheduled, hurried, and stressed out. Then we get up and do it again. Have you ever felt like you do the same thing over and over again and that nothing you accomplish really matters? All of us at some time or another need to stop, quiet ourselves, and take a good long look at what we are doing with our lives. Are we running on the never ending hamster wheel or are we investing our time in something that matters?
I was married to Don Pittman, the man that coined the phrase Never Settle, for 24 amazing years. He probably understood the value of making your life count more than anyone I have ever known. He could have accepted the death sentence he was given back in 1999 when he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a life-threatening cancer of the bone marrow. But he knew God had a grander vision for his life. Every day he got up determined to make a difference in the life of someone else even if he was on the way to the cancer center for chemotherapy. Thousands of lives have been changed for the better because they knew this man and now his legacy lives on through this organization. If it were not for Don Pittman, there would be no Never Settle.
Don accomplished his God-given purpose while he was still with us. Now it’s my turn. I believe with all my heart that as long as I am still left on this earth, I have a purpose to fulfill. When God puts a passion in your heart, that God-ordained passion becomes your responsibility. It doesn’t matter if it’s providing clean water to kids that go without or raising funds to purchase uniforms so children can attend school. We cannot become content with the status quo. World change is not only possible, it’s happening every day because of members of the Never Settle team. Be a part of something that changes lives long after you are gone. You only have one life. Make it count.
