Splash’s first and most expansive clean water project is 100% complete – an achievement ten years in the making. Eric Stowe founded Splash, the Seattle-based, nonprofit organization, in 2007 with the bold vision of reaching every orphanage in China with clean, safe water. That’s over 1,100 sites across 32 provinces totaling 3.7 million square miles. Thanks to generous donors, dedicated in-country staff, and close collaboration with the Chinese government, Splash successfully reached their goal by the end of 2017.
Why it matters
Life trajectories are forever impacted by unclean water. For the 150,000 kids, staff, and elderly adults living in orphanages across China, much of the water they had access to was often dirty and contaminated with harmful bacteria. For a child who spends the majority of their childhood in an orphanage, the long-term impact of waterborne illness is substantial.
How they do it
Splash leverages what already works for restaurants and hotels – their technology, supply chains, and standards – to get the same clean, safe water flowing in orphanages that is already found in multinational chains such as Starbucks, McDonald’s, and many others.
Here’s what Splash had to say about their amazing accomplishment:
As we look toward the close of 2017 and reflect on this decade-long achievement, we’re inspired by the years of hard-work and impact we’ve made on hundreds of thousands of children. Splash is thrilled to share our most recent Annual Report, which highlights our recent accomplishments and celebrates our first ten years of impact. On behalf of Splash and the children we serve, we thank you for your partnership and continued generosity.
What’s next?
Splash is developing a sustainability plan to keep safe water flowing in all 1,100 orphanages in China over the long-term. Outside of China, their five-year goal is to reach 100% of government school children in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Kathmandu (Nepal), and Kolkata (India), benefitting one million children. To date, Splash has completed over 1,600 projects across eight countries in Asia and Africa (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Vietnam and Thailand), serving 400,000 children.
Please join me in congratulating Splash on this incredible milestone. Let’s keep up the momentum by continuing to support clean water projects for kids!
